What is GMP?

Helping You Understand GMP Before You Build or Renovate

If you're planning to build or renovate your facility in Malaysia — whether it’s for food, cosmetics, health supplements, or pharmaceuticals — chances are you’ve come across the term GMP. But what does it really mean, and why does it matter so much before you even start operations?

Let us break it down for you in simple terms.

GMP in Malaysia: What Does It Stand For?

GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practice.

GMP is not just about producing quality products — it’s about doing it in a controlled, hygienic, and safe environment. This includes your production layout, material flow, room design, finishing materials, air control, water system, and more.

If your space is not built to meet these requirements, you might fail your GMP audit — which means no certification, and delays in launching your business/ getting your new orders from customers.

Why It Matters Before You Renovate

Many factory and kitchen owners only realise the importance of GMP compliance after construction is done — and by then, it’s often too late (or too expensive) to fix.

We understand what NPRA and GMP auditors look for
We help you avoid common design mistakes
We choose materials and room setups that meet the requirements

If you’re not sure whether GMP is right for your business, here’s a quick breakdown of MeSTI, HACCP, and HALAL so you can better understand which certification fits your needs.
MeSTI stands for Makanan Selamat Tanggungjawab Industri.
It’s a basic food safety certification introduced by Malaysia’s Ministry of Health for small and micro food manufacturers.

MeSTI focuses on:
• Hygiene practices
• Basic layout and flow
• Cleanliness and food handling

If you’re just starting and don’t have a proper food safety system yet, MeSTI is often the first step before moving up to GMP or HACCP.

HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point.
This certification is all about identifying and controlling risks (like contamination, spoilage, etc.) during food production.

You’ll need:
• Documented food safety plans
• Strict monitoring procedures
• Proper process control points

It’s commonly required by exporters, food factories, and F&B brands that supply to big supermarkets or international clients.

HALAL certification proves that your products are permissible and clean according to Islamic law.

It’s issued by JAKIM and covers:
• Ingredient sourcing
• Hygiene and sanitation
• Production processes
• Employee handling and cleanliness

Many food manufacturers apply for both HALAL + GMP or HALAL + HACCP to show full compliance to safety and religious requirements.
